It’s spooky season which means the autumnal and halloween seasonal promotion is at its best.
This month I’m giving you a small checklist to ensure your seasonal promotion is the best it can be.
Theme
It’s vital that all the imagery you use not only reflects on your brand, business and ethos but that it also reflects the season. Here are some examples for Halloween.
Colour Pallet: Think about the overall colour of your image, for Halloween, there should be lots of oranges and autumnal colours, or through reds and blacks if you're going for a more Horror vibe. This could be achieved by your products themselves and/or a combination of any of the below.
Mise en scene: this is french for ‘everything in the scene’ and is an easy way of talking about props, set dressing, costuming, makeup etc. For example you could include pumpkins or Trick or Treating or if you are going to be in the image add a hint of orange or red to your outfit.
Composition
Lighting: lighting should be lowkey providing an eerie feel, perfect for the Halloween season. This can be achieved by reflecting natural light onto your subject while the rest of the image is lit by a dimmer light source. This highlights your product or service while keeping the spooky feel.
Framing and Focus: This depends on your brand image and identity, whether you want wide angles with a deep depth of field meaning everything is in focus, or the complete opposite. However, a traditional ‘Halloween’ look would be to go for a wider shot paired with lots of negative space and a shallow depth of field creating a blurry background.
Seasonal competition
Tying in giveaways with your seasonal promotion is a great way to get new eyes on your products or service. There’s always the option to have a post where followers tag in 3 friends and share to their stories and these always do well as your brand or business is being shared and seen by many people, some of which will be introduced to you through this competition. Or maybe run a more creative competition, asking followers to take a photo of themselves interacting with or using an existing product or service. Create a hashtag which they use in the caption and tag you in along with 3 friends. You could tie this in with the spooky season, incorporating a pumpkin carving competition, halloween costume competition or trick-or-treating competition into the social media giveaway.
